Background

In wave B, the presence of decubitus (bedsores) was asked in the self-administered questionnaire and during the medical interview. Moreover, during the medical interview decubitus was also determined by observations / examinations by the medical interviewer.

Measurement instruments in LASA

In LASA159 (medical interview) the following questions were asked (question 3 involves an examination by the medical interviewer).
– Do you have bedsores? Possible answers: yes; no
(if yes) Where are these bedsores located? Possible answers: heel; ankle; hip; buttocks; other
– (in case of bedsores) During physical examination, it is determined whether the wounds are indeed bedsores. For the most severe wound,  the interviewer determines the stage of development.

Possible answers: no decubitus; stage 1: local non-blanchable redness and/or cyanosis of the skin; stage 2: blister development; stage 3: full thickness tissue loss; stage 4: full thickness tissue loss resulting in exposure of muscles, bone, blackening of skin, or pus.

In LASA116 (self-administered questionnaire) the following questions were asked.

– Do you have bedsores at the moment? Possible answers: no; yes, less than 2 weeks; yes, more than 2 weeks but less than 3 months; yes, already more than 3 months
– (if yes)
Are you being treated to prevent the onset of bedsores? Possible answers: no; yes
