When LASA started out, I had just finished training as a Psychiatrist and was offered the chance to do a PhD in Psychiatric Epidemiology. LASA was a once in a lifetime lucky opportunity for me to train as an epidemiologist and to further my interest in geriatric psychiatry. After finishing my PhD on late life depression in 1996 I worked with the LASA team to further develop our work on the emotional and cognitive functioning of older people in the Netherlands.
