Dementia parents

Background
Persons whose father or mother has had dementia are more likely to develop dementia themselves, although the rate varies considerably. Genes, such as apolipoprotein E (ApoE), do play some role in the development of dementia, but their specific effects are still under study.
Measurement instrument in LASA
Dementia of parents was assessed by four items; two identical ones for the biological mother and father separately: whether a diagnosis of dementia or severe memory dysfunction was ever determined by a medical doctor, and whether he/she was ever treated for this in a hospital or other care institution.
