For my PhD research, I will study the applications of Machine Learning for epidemiology. Machine Learning techniques are increasingly used in research, also for epidemiological research. Yet, we do not know exactly, when and how Machine Learning techniques should be used, and when they are of added value (as compared to conventional statistical methods). I will use data from LASA to study the roll Machine Learning could play in the challenges we face in epidemiological research. Examples of these challenges include: correlated variables (e.g., depression and anxiety), missing data, and causality.
